Questions to ask at your first consultation

A few thoughtful questions can help you explain your priorities and understand what comes next.

Your first consultation is an opportunity to discuss what matters to you and ask questions. You do not need to arrive with all the answers. A short list of priorities can help you make the most of the conversation.

Start with what matters most

Before your appointment, write down the main reasons you are seeking advice. Consider what you would like to discuss, any changes you have noticed and what you hope to understand.

If you have several concerns, identify the ones you most want to cover first.

Questions you could ask

  • What information would help you understand my concerns?
  • What options might be appropriate for me?
  • What are the possible benefits, risks and limitations of those options?
  • Are there alternatives I should consider?
  • What would any suggested tests involve, and what might they tell us?
  • What costs should I expect?
  • What happens after this appointment?

Ask for clear explanations

If something is unfamiliar, ask for it to be explained in plain language. You can take notes or ask whether written information is available.

Before you finish

Check that you understand any agreed next steps, who will organise them and how follow-up will work. If results are expected, ask how and when you should follow up.
